FC's women make it back-to-back home league wins with victory over Liverpool Feds

Perhaps a little early to be talking fortress Broadhurst, but FC’s women sent a strong signal to the league on Sunday following up their 2-1 victory over league leaders, Ellesmere Port earlier in the month to end October with a 5-0 thrashing of Liverpool Marshalls Feds Reserves.

The three points see FC United climb four places to usurp their opponents in mid table and with games in hand on four of the five teams above them, have a created a platform to push on in the league. Four first half goals from Shellby Wolstencroft, Lucy Bonner, Kirsty Chambers and a 45th minute Beth Hayes penalty, with the addition of a 90th minute second for Wolstencroft without reply, ensured a good end to their October fixtures.

Kicking towards the St Mary’s Road End, United got proceedings underway and in a frenetic first five minutes both sides looked threatening with the visitor’s Carina Mendes denied by a superbly timed tackle from Chelsea Patient whilst at other end Chambers cut in from the left but could only find the side netting. The breakthrough came on seven minutes as Aimee Cooke fed a pass to Leah Hartshorne who in turn found Wolstencroft in space inside the ‘D’ and the striker dipped a superb half volley over Sue Carmichael to open the scoring.

Chambers had the beating of full back Jade Moore and pulled the ball back to Bonner who was narrowly beaten to the ball. However, moments later United had their second just before the quarter hour as Bonner chased a ball over the top from Jess Tonge, bore down on goal and coolly slotted her shot past the advancing Carmichael to double the red’s lead.

A long clearance from Chloe Williams into space deep into opposition territory down the left saw Chambers, Bonner and Wolstencroft bear down on a stranded Carmichael who, under three-fold pressure, slipped and sliced her clearance into the path of the FC captain who fired unerringly beyond the unfortunate keeper to make it 3-0 on 24 minutes.

United relaxed and played some excellent fluent football limiting chances to the Merseysiders to a speculative shot from Mendes and a 20-yard effort from Rachel Davison that was superbly charged down as centre halves Fran Davies and Chelsea Patient rushed to block the effort. Conversely, United created further chances and in the final minute of an excellent first half Chambers cut the ball back to Wolstencroft who was bundled over in the area with referee Kevin Moore pointing straight to the spot. Hayes took the responsibility and sent Carmichael the wrong way as she stroked home the spot kick to end a very satisfactory first half.

The second period proved much more of a stalemate and as so often happens in football, never reached the heights of a commanding first half as a combination of substitutions and a proliferation of free kicks and cautions, fragmented the game as the visitors enjoyed more possession without too much end product.

United found some rhythm as the game entered its last quarter hour with substitutes Beth Tattersall and Charlie Evans causing problems for the Fed’s defence. In the final minute the Reds’ strike partnership had the last say in the game as Bonner forced an excellent save from Carmichael and Wolstencroft fired home the rebound into the roof of the net from a tightening angle.

FC United’s Women are back in Liverpool next Sunday 1 November, to face Mersey Girls as they go in search of their first victory on the road and face Mersey Rail Bootle at Broadhurst Park a week later. Get behind your other first team and support the FC women’s team in their new league.
