Last minute winner in five goal thriller

A last minute winner by Simon Carden sealed victory for FC United in a five goal thriller against a skilful Newcastle Town side before a Lyme Valley Stadium record crowd of 1,833 supporters.

Carden’s coolly taken volley sealed an amazing comeback for the Reds who had found themselves not only trailing 2-1 just after the hour mark but also had to deal with the added setback of striker Rory Patterson being forced to go in goal for the injured Sam Ashton. But hard work, determination and the club’s trademark attacking football snatched all three points for Margy’s men, sending the travelling masses in to euphoria on the terraces.

Steve Spencer broke the deadlock half an hour into the game when he followed up a Patterson shot which had been parried by the home side’s goalkeeper Richard Froggatt. Patterson latched on to a knock on by Stuart Rudd and was unfortunate not to get himself on the score sheet with a shot from just in side the 18-yard box, but it didn’t matter because Spencer was on hand to make it count.

Every credit to Castle though, as player manager Nigel Gleghorn wrote in his note for the official matchday programme, they certainly weren’t there to lie down and take a beating from the men from Manchester.

Castle’s top scorer and former Aston Villa trainee, Dave Berks grabbed an equaliser five minutes before the break and then with the home side enjoying some possession strike partner Nick Wellecomme took the lead just after the hour mark. Castle had a sustained amount of pressure in the build up with the Reds failing to clear their lines before Wellecomme got on the end of a cross from the left wing.

Whilst scoring, Wellecomme collided with Ashton who had raced off his line in a bid to close him down. The young United ‘keeper definitely came out of incident the worse of the two because he had to be helped to hobble off the pitch and could take no further part in the game.

Nick Platt was thrown into the action to replace Ashton with captain Patterson donning the ‘keeper’s jersey and gloves for the last half an hour. At this point things were not looking too good for the league leaders, but manager Karl Marginson took the opportunity provided by the break in play due to Ashton’s injury to rally his team with an on field team talk.

Whatever, Margy said certainly worked because the Reds pulled together and Carden grabbed two priceless goals. The first came with 15 minutes to go when Alex Mortimer curled in a free kick from the right wing, Rob Nugent was perfectly placed at the back post to nod the ball down across goal and Carden reacted quickest to slot it home from two yards out.

If the FC United faithful were pleased with the equaliser, they had just 15 more minutes to wait before the day turned out to be one of the best trips they’ve ever been on.

With the Reds piling the pressuring on, Castle began to panic a bit at the back and conceded a number of corners and throw-ins. With just seconds remaining, Rudd went over to the left wing to take a long throw-in into a crowded penalty area. The ball was headed on by a defender and Carden volleyed the winner into the top right corner. All that was left was for Margy and his team to celebrate and exchange mutual appreciation with the army of supporters before they all got to go home.
