FC United youth player signs for championship club

FC United Youth player Rhys Coogan has signed for Championship club Blackpool FC, after impressing scouts with his performances for the Youth Team.

Coogan, 18, has signed a 1-year contract with the Seasiders and will now continue on his development pathway in football with Blackpool FC.

The winger has featured for FC United Youth and Reserve teams this season and was spotted by Blackpool FC scouts during the Youth team friendly fixture against Morecambe FC, which finished 3-3.

FC United Academy Manager, Paul Bright, said “Rhys has worked really hard on his game and has displayed the right attitudes and behaviours since coming to the club in May. He has taken on board our advice and was a key member of the Youth Team squad. We are pleased for Rhys and we have always said that we are looking to prepare our players for the club’s first team or back into the professional game. The fact that Rhys has been offered a contract at a professional club after being with FC United for 6 months is testament to the hard work of Rhys and the abilities and support of the coaching staff at the club. Ultimately we want players to achieve their full potential and support them in playing at the highest standard they can. We wish Rhys the best of luck at Blackpool FC.???

Rhys added, “ I am obviously delighted at being presented with such a fantastic opportunity to join Blackpool FC and to progress my playing career. I would, however, like to thank all my FC United teammates and the coaching staff who have supported me. The full time youth programme FC United have put in place this season is professional and well planned and has helped me develop. What is also apparent is the commitment of all the coaches at the club in helping players improve.“

The FC United Youth programme follows a similar model to youth structures in the professional game and the 16-18 year olds are at the club on a full time basis, completing an academic course each morning and training every afternoon. FC United Youth Team also competes in the Football Conference Youth Alliance League on Wednesday afternoons and the team was also the first to be entered into The FA Youth Cup for the first time in our history.
