FC Youth lose out to Youth Alliance Champions

Gateshead FC Youth vs. FC United Youth

Football Conference Youth Alliance
Monday 8th September

FC United Youth Team were shown the standards required in the Football Conference Youth Alliance, losing 4-0 to current champions Gateshead FC.

From the outset, FC United’s young players were giving away strength and size to the more physically mature Gateshead team, however FC United worked hard during the opening period to prevent Gateshead from creating any clear cut chances, with Zac Cooper, Billy Nugent and Nathan Chorlton constantly forcing ‘Heed out wide and away from goal.

Gateshead’s main attacking threat in the first half came from left winger, Maschak Kanda, and FC’s Dominik Williams had to constantly be aware of the No. 7 looking to cut inside and create chances at goal, with Kanda testing goalkeeper Ben Jupp on a number of occasions.

The best chance of the opening 30 minutes actually fell to FC United, with Callum Jones playing a through ball between the right back and centre half for Jacob Holt to collect 20 yards out, however Holt’s shot was scuffed wide of the target.

5 minutes later, FC United again broke the Gateshead defensive line with a diagonal pass finding Rhys Coogan’s run on the left hand side of the penalty area but Coogan’s delivery couldn’t find a red shirt in the penalty area and Gateshead cleared.

The teams went in at half time 0-0 and even though Gateshead had the majority of possession, the young reds work rate and set-up restricted the home team to a few half chances.

The scoreline didn’t stay 0-0 for long, and 4 minutes into the second half a delivery from the right side found Gateshead centre forward Connor Halpin 14 yards out with his back to goal. Halpin used his strength and size to hold off FC’s Nugent and turn to fire a thunderous shot off the underside off the crossbar and into the back of the net. 1-0 to Gateshead.

FC United still looked very much in the game until a ball over the top caught the youth team defence by surprise. Goalkeeper Jupp failed to come out and clear the danger and with Halpin looking favourite to get to the ball first, centre back Chorlton brought down the Gateshead forward on the edge of the area and was ultimately handed a red card by the referee.

The resulting free kick, taken by Ryan Drane, was hit over the FC wall and struck the post before hitting Jupp and going into the net. 2-0 to Gateshead and FC United down to 10 men.

Left Back Drane added his second, and Gatesheads third goal of the game, 5 minutes later with a cross-come-shot from the left wing that caught Jupp stranded and flew into the right hand corner of the FC goal.

The FC youngsters were still working hard and looking to create chances and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 75th minute. Rhys Coogan used his pace to get away from the Gateshead right back and drove into the opposition penalty area only to collide with the Gateshead centre half and chasing right back. The referee deemed play on, to the protest of the FC United players and fans.

With 5 minutes to play, Gateshead secured the win with another effort from out wide, this time on the right hand side, hit by Gateshead substitute Adam Ingram that again caught out Jupp and landed in the back of the FC net.

The game finished 4-0 to Gateshead and even though the young reds worked hard and gave 100% throughout the game they came away from the North East with nothing to show for their efforts.

FC United Academy Manager, Paul Bright said “I felt for the lads today as they gave us everything, however a few individual mistakes made it a real uphill battle for us. We knew that Gateshead would be strong, organized and have quality throughout their team, however we also have quality in the squad and it is about us being focused and taking our chances when they arise. We will go away and reflect on the performance and come back stronger. I personally didn’t feel that the 4-0 scoreline reflected the game overall, however teams like Gateshead will punish you if you make mistakes and the lads have to cut those mistakes out of their game and continue to develop.???
