Margy expects 13 'cup finals' - starting at Stocksbridge

FC United manager Karl Marginson is expecting his promotion chasing players to compete in the remaining 13 fixtures of the season as is they are cup finals, starting at Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday.

Margy is keen that people don’t get carried away after Tuesday’s last gasp 1-0 win over league leaders Chorley and admits that, as ever, he is taking the Evo-Stik Premier Division one game at a time. But he is also keen to remind his players that if they go on a winning streak until the end of the season there is a real possibility of promotion either as champions or via the play-offs.

Margy said: "Tuesday’s victory was up there with the best moments I’ve had with FC United but now it’s back to business. Sometimes people get carried away talking about matches three or four weeks or other teams playing each other but the main thing we’ve got to do is make sure our house is in order."

Margy added: "We’ve got 13 games left, if we win all of those - we’d expect to be champions. That’s what we have to concentrate on. But there isn’t an easy game in this league, people need to realise that. Droylsden served us a couple of early warnings before we went on to beat them and that’s something I’ve reminded the players about. Regardless of whether teams are at the top of the table or the bottom, they will all provide us with a tough game because they will be up for it. As a result, we need to be up for every game too. Victories are won through hard work and endeavour first and foremost, and once you’ve achieved that part you can let your ability shine through."

Margy singled out Tuesday’s match winner Tom Greaves for demonstrating exactly what he means. He explained: "Tom must have made 60 to 70 runs at Chorley and barely got anywhere near the ball all night. But he carried on sticking to his task and eventually he made the run that allowed him to score the winner. That requires hard work and commitment and that’s what I expect from all the players."

Matthew Walwyn and James Spencer are expected to be the only absentees for Saturday’s trip to South Yorkshire and Adam Jones hopes to recover from a dead leg suffered at Chorley.

Get yourself to that football ground for the first of those 13 ’cup finals’!
