FC United aiming for three in a row against Ilkeston

FC United are hoping to not only get to play two games in a week after nearly three weeks off but also to rack up two victories as we entertain Ilkeston this Saturday at Gigg Lane.

The Reds got our promotion push back on track with a 2-1 win over Nantwich Town on Tuesday night, putting us three points off the play-off places with games in hand. Next up it’s the Robins, who United rescued a point from in a very entertaining 3-3 draw at the New Manor Ground on 4th January with a last minute goal from Tom Greaves.

A win could put Karl Marginson’s side into the all important fifth place if Blyth Spartans and Ashton United lose to Buxton and Worksop, respectively. However, even if our rivals don’t drop points, United will be confident of catching them with our games in hand. As such, it’s important to keep the pressure up by beating our Derbyshire visitors tomorrow.

Margy was happy to get a game and a win in midweek and is looking for more of the same on Saturday. He said: "Our performance on Tuesday was understandably rusty, given that we hadn’t played a competitive game in nearly three weeks, but we did enough to earn the three points and that is vital at this time of the season."

And Margy explained the thinking behind using a new formation in the last two games: "Once again we went for three at the back and I think it worked well. We used a similar system at Marine and were very pleased with how that game panned out, so I went for it again on Tuesday. It gives us a lot of options and flexibility that maybe other formations don’t."

United came through Tuesday’s victory unscathed and the missing Dave Birch (hamstring) and Greg Daniels (knee) will both be hoping to prove their fitness in time to take some part in Saturday’s match.

FC United of Manchester versus Ilkeston is this Saturday at Gigg Lane at the supporter-friendly and traditional kick-off time of three o’clock. It’s pay on the gate as usual with prices voted for by our members; £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and £2 for under-18s. Get yourself to that football ground.
