Major fundraising landmark reached at Trafford game

We said we hoped it would happen at the Trafford game and it did happen at the Trafford game - we’ve now raised £50,000 from our barrel collections since we started collecting nine years ago.

This calls for a massive well done to everyone who has dug deep over the years to help us reach such a major landmark. Of course, being FC, we now need to redouble those efforts and raise even more to get us closer to Moston - but for at least a few moments, let’s celebrate achieving such a significant amount raised, and every penny of it from people who support and in many cases own this club of ours.

The Trafford game on Tuesday night saw the Pound for the Ground team sell 455 tickets to supporters who turned up en mass despite the dreadful weather and traffic problems. The winning ticket, number 1488, was claimed at halftime by regular member Paul from Hale. He said that he will be treating his match-going mates to a good drink to celebrate. £255 remained for the Development Fund.

One of our regular Pound for the Ground sellers tried to sell a ticket to one of his regulars on Tuesday, but was greeted with: "I’ve put all my change in the barrels, we need to hit that £50,000 figure!!!" Well, he certainly wasn’t on his own. The total barrel collection came to a monumental £602 helping us to top the £50k landmark. One supporter handed in a bag of more than £50 in change at Reception 2; there was an anonymous donation of £200; we had swapped various old coins and notes for £105; Raymond exchanged $40 for £40 (what an exchange rate) and there were lots of smaller bags of change in the mix. There was also 30 euros and some foreign stuff that will be traded into pounds in the near future.

The upshot is that as a football club we have raised £50,333 through the barrel collections towards our new home in Moston. Never has the saying "Every penny counts" been more appropriate. Thanks once again to each and every one of you who has played a part and here’s to the next £50,000!!

To that end, the barrels will be out again this Saturday at the Nantwich game. We’ll see you - and your loose change - at Gigg Lane then!
