People United Day: Football Unites - Racism Divides

FC United’s People United Day and contribution towards Black History Month sees Colin Yates, acclaimed artist, bringing his “Black Looks??? Exhibition to this Saturday’s home game against Chorley.

There will be a workshop attended by three youth groups from across Greater Manchester along with an exhibition open to all supporters in the smaller room in the Social Club on Gigg Lane.

Colin’s work has seen him become Artist in Residence for Leicester City Football Club, and he has been granted several arts awards, including a Creative Ambitions Award for a long-term project portraying the icons David Beckham and George Best.

The project also marks the rise of the position of the professional footballer within society.

’Black Looks’ traces over a century of professional Black and Asian footballers in Britain through a series of portraits. It has also been shown in a number of prestigious solo exhibitions around the UK as well as the European Parliament in Brussels.

Colin has been a passionate football fan all his life and has supported Manchester United for well over 40 years.

Unite Welcomes FC supporters

Unite’s Manchester Co-operative Branch are kindly sponsoring Saturday’s programme and People United Day activities.

Branch organiser and FC member, Dave Williams, told the club: " Unite’s mission is to organise people to strive for a society that places equality, dignity and respect above all else. Our union recognises that we can only achieve this if we bring people together from all walks of life. In this era, too many people in our country are being pushed to the margins of society. They deserve to be heard; they too deserve the support to organise collectively. It is with this in mind that Unite has founded its community membership scheme, open to all, including those not in employment.

"FC United supporters, more than most, appreciate that like minded people, coming together with a common aim have real power, the power to change things for the better. That’s why we at Unite are proud to support the club and wish you all the best for your People United Day!???
