Youth win five goal thriller

FC United youth team travelled to Chester for a second round tie in the Neil Thomason Memorial Trophy and came away with a battling 3-2 win, having twice come from behind.

The reds started brightly with two good efforts in the first three minutes, but the rest of the first half belonged to Chester as they made the better of an uneven surface at the Cheshire County Sports Club; Josh Lynn proving to be a handful for the home side with three good chances before the hosts opened the scoring in the 39th minute. The ball being forced home after bobbling around the FC area after Broadbent and a post came to the rescue with an initial effort.

Four minutes later Chester were gifted a chance to double the lead from the penalty spot. Kial Callacher adjudged to have fouled his man although there looked to have been three separate fouls on Kial as the Chester man got the better of him. The kick was however well saved by Josh Broadbent.

A few well chosen words in the dressing room at half time helped FC to pick up the pace in the second half. Mike Taylor had a shot saved in the forty-seventh minute and the equaliser was only a further two minutes in coming. Daniel Maynard drove into the box and his shot was spilled by Oliver Foster and squirmed goal wards. Despite his valiant efforts the ball had crossed the line before Foster could clear it. Kane Hughes did make sure, but the linesman had already signalled for Maynards goal.

A double substitution five minutes later could be deemed to have been the catalyst for the eventual result as Jonathan Poizer and Yousif Yousif came on for Andy Lee and Callum Rattigan. Unfortunately that was not before Chester re-took the lead on the hour, in a move that quickly swept from Chester goal keeper to a Chester goal with just two other touches including a neat lob over Broadbent.

The lads thought they had equalised on 70 minutes when Kial headed home a Mike Taylor free kick but it was disallowed as the referee had spotted some pushing as the ball was en-route. It was 2-2 just two minutes later as Lewis Adams chased a clearance and crossed from the by-line. The ball found its way to Yousif who had the task of firing home from all of thirty inches. Lewis thought he had scored himself three minutes later when his sweet volley, heading for the bottom corner was well saved by Foster.

The winner came in the 82nd minute as Maynard found Poizer in the box, he twisted and turned before shooting goal ward and into the net as Fosters dive was thwarted by two deflections which helped the ball over him.
The home side strove for an equaliser and on the run of play will consider they were unlucky not to have got it, but the reds held on to progress to the semi final. It was far from a classic match on a difficult pitch but manager Dave Brown was delighted that the lads had found it in themselves to grind out a result when not playing very well.
