Youth singing in the rain with late winner at Altrincham

As the Sunday lunchtime drizzle turned to afternoon deluge, the young reds (playing in blue) took on Altrincham and emerged victorious. Tributes should be given though to the true man of the match, the volunteer who washes the kit.

FC United started brightly with a number of half chances in the first ten minutes, Dylan Moloney and Matthew Tierney had good efforts that were off target, although it was Altrincham who scored first, Adam Reid in the home goal dealt with a cross and cleared it up field with a defensive mix up to allowing them to prod home in the 13th minute. Their lead only lasted two minutes as Dylan ran from midfield and shot across the keeper into the far corner.

Even at this stage the pitch had become something of a mud bath and just staying on two feet was perhaps the biggest challenge. It was one that FC proved somewhat more adept at and home tactics seemed to be based on slowing the game down and hoping for mistakes. It became increasingly difficult to play football as the ball frequently stuck in the mud although credit is given for the fact that FC never stopped trying to do so and that Altrincham posed little further threat, their best chances coming from two free kicks just after the half hour. The rest of the first half passed with wave after wave of FC attacks although in truth few of them really tested the home goal keeper.

In the second half the rain continued and FC continued to press for a second goal although the pitch was starting to make the first team game at Frickley seem like it was played on a croquet lawn. Try as they might FC were regularly frustrated by the pitch and the Altrincham defence; half time substitute Ryan Westwood and Carl Fitton both fired wide with good efforts. It was not until midway through the half that the Altrincham keeper was called into action. An FC corner was cleared to Ryan Lyons about 25 yards out and his low drive was turned away for another corner. Five minutes later Lyons fed Davison Banda wide on the right and his cross-cum-shot fizzed across goal and just wide.

The pitch seemed to be getting the better of both sides and a draw seemed the most likely result, especially when both sides had penalty appeals turned down. Firstly when Banda made a defensive challenge that many of the FC support thought could be given, wasn’t and secondly around five minutes later when Westwood appeared to be fouled in the Altrincham box, the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge.

FC got the reward for their persistence and desire when Josh Burke found Lyons wide on the right and his cross went in off the shoulder of Moloney as the game staggered into added time. Altrrincham, despite being second best raised themselves for one last push for an equaliser that didn’t come and in truth wouldn’t have been deserved. After five extra minutes the full time whistle went and the 100% record remains intact.
