FC Youth Blown Off Course

FC United U18s 0-3 Curzon Ashton U18s

After a short break the FC United Youth team returned to competitive action on Sunday when Curzon Ashton were the visitors to St Bride’s Field. Unfortunately, a high wind meant conditions were difficult for all. Curzon coped better than the reds and went home with a 3-0 win under their belts.

Home debuts were given to Ferre Edwards, Scott Cheetham, Stephanos Ioannou and Matt Clarke; the last of whom took his bow as a half time substitute. All of them gave solid performances, indeed Stephanos on the left wing pressed Curzon right back Ryan McNulty so hard that he was a clear vote for opposition man of the match. Equally Jordan Dainty provided an efficient display of simple unfussy defensive play.

In terms of quality of play perhaps the scoreline if not the result flattered the visitors, the difference being that Curzon were able to profit when conditions prompted errors while FC didn’t. The first goal came just after the half hour mark when a corner was headed towards goal and appeared to catch unawares the man on the line. The second goal came purely from the effect of the wind. A hopeful punt forward by Curzon would under normal circumstances have gone comfortably through to Joe Grantham. Sadly, it held up in the wind and Joe, who produced three breathtaking saves at other points in the game, misjudged the flight and allowed the ball to bounce over his head. Curzon’s Aaron Best ran past him to prod the ball home,

Aaron completed the scoring on 90 minutes when he ran on to another ball which had eluded the FC defence and fired home from a seemingly impossible angle.
