Treble glory beckons for departing youth players

Whilst the first team is over in Sweden this weekend, FC United’s under-18s will be keeping the red flag flying high back in Blighty as they go for an incredible treble in what could be their last ever game together.

Peter Freakes’ fledglings take on Middleton Colts in the Manchester Youth Cup Final at Ayreshire Road in Salford at 3.00pm on Sunday hoping to add to the Neil Thomason Memorial Cup and the North West Youth Alliance’s Premiership play-off trophy, which were both won earlier in the month.

The young Reds have coasted through the four qualifying rounds to get to the final, scoring 20 goals and conceding just two, and Freakes is confident that his side can finish their fantastic season on a high.

He said: "The lads have been tremendous this season and all their hard work is paying off. This team has proven that they can beat anyone and I fully expect them to do it again on Sunday. We’ve built the side on a solid defence, particularly Nick Swirad and Andy Lee and the keeper Grant Shenton, and we’ve got players who can create and score goals too."??

Many of the players will be too old for the under-18s next year, some will be promoted to the first team squad and the others will be helped to find clubs elsewhere with FC United keeping a close eye on their progress. Peter added: "It would be fantastic if any supporters who are not going to Sweden can come down to Salford to cheer this side on because it could be the last game they ever play together and they deserve a great send off."??
