FC United bow out of The Emirates FA Cup against Doncaster Rovers

FC United bowed out of The Emirates FA Cup 5-1 at the hands of a very professional performance from League One Doncaster Rovers on Saturday night at Broadhurst Park. The Reds gave a decent account of themselves but the gulf in class – 97 places in the football pyramid – was evident throughout and the game was effectively over by halftime with a 4-1 scoreline. Regan Linney gave Neil Reynolds' side a glimmer of hope and something to cheer about with a composed solo goal after 30 minutes to make it 2-1 but they were punished by the South Yorkshire visitors for some lax defending. The opening 10 minutes saw the away side in the ascendancy but there was little goalmouth action. However, that changed on 11 minutes when Brad Halliday broke free down the right to cross to Fejiri Okenabirhie to tap into the empty net. The lead was doubled 10 minutes later when the FC United defence stood still waiting for a flag that never came, allowing Ben Whiteman to stroll through and side foot home. On the half hour, the Reds got back into the game when Linney picked the pocket of ex Manchester United defender Reece James near the halfway line. Linney charged down the ball and ran 50 yards before coolly finishing with aplomb past goalkeeper Louis Jones. Sadly, the comeback lasted just three minutes as Josh Sims was allowed all the time in the world to cut into the box and fire home via a deflection. With three minutes to go in the half, FC were again undone by a deflected goal. Chris Doyle's last ditch challenge could only loop James Coppinger's shot over Dan Lavercombe to make it 4-1. The halftime score was cruel on FC United and Reynolds would have hoped for the Reds to start the second half brightly. Unfortunately, five minutes into the second half the ball found its way to Sims who fired home via another deflection and the crossbar. The game was over as a contest but The Reds continued to give a good account and created chances. Adam Dodd crossed to Linney who flicked over, Aaron Morris also almost played Linney in but his cross had too much on it. Charlie Ennis was next to have a chance, firing straight at Jones, Dan Cockerline doing similar 10 minutes later. The game ended with FC United coming close on two occasions, Michael Donohue breaking into the box but firing just past the far post and Michael Fowler clipping the ball narrowly wide. Despite the scoreline, FC were never disgraced in the game. They players more than played their part and can feel aggrieved not to have had another goal or two next to their name. FC United may well have lost the game, but with the coverage over these past few days, the club will certainly have made some new friends. Website man of the match: Adam Dodd. Kept going defensively and was certainly a danger going forward. Report by Steven Wood
