NEWCASTLE ELITE ACADEMY 4 FC UNITED of MANCHESTER ACADEMY 'A' TEAM 3
FC United of Manchester’s Academy ’A’ team travelled up to Northumbria University on Monday afternoon, and were perhaps a little unlucky to return home with a narrow 4-3 challenge match defeat at the hands of the Newcastle Elite Academy.

The home side had gone into an early lead on 16 minutes after the FC United Academy team had conceded an unnecessary free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. No. 9 JACOB O’BRIEN rifled a low free kick under the FC United wall and into the corner of the net to put the hosts 1-0 up.

On 28 minutes, it was 2-0 to Newcastle Elite Academy. A cross came in from the left and the unmarked JACOB O’BRIEN was allowed to spin and turn the ball home.

Six minutes before half-time, the Young Reds pulled one back. Callum Cooper looped the ball in from the right and trialist TAWAB DJANKPATA was perfectly placed to head home from 12 yards out.

That made the score 2-1 to the hosts at half-time, but unfortunately for FC United, the home side then regained their two goal advantage within a couple of minutes of the second half restart. Although Mason Walker had well saved an effort from the ever-dangerous Jacob O’Brien, JAMES REAY was on hand to steer the loose ball home.

That made it 3-1 and worse was to follow on 60 minutes. The visitors conceded another needless foul just outside their own 18 yard box, and JACOB O’BRIEN stepped up to smash an unstoppable free-kick past Mason Walker, to make the score 4-1 and also to complete a well-deserved hat-trick.

A trip on FC United’s Tawab Djankpata inside the home penalty area on 73 minutes then gave the visitors a glimmer of hope, and DYLAN BLACKLEDGE made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick.

A 20 yard free-kick converted by MASON BEARD on 80 minutes then made the score 4-3 to set up a nervy last few minutes, but Newcastle Elite Academy saw out the remaining time to hold on for a hard-fought win by the narrowest of margins.
