Match Report
In the first part of this week’s Curzon Ashton double header, the reserves travelled to the Tameside Stadium and came away with a claim to winning the second half 2-0. Unfortunately that was after a disappointing first half display in which, given the freedom of the park the hosts won 5-0.

There was a promising start for the reds but that disappeared with the first goal after ten minutes. A pass threaded through via a feint deflection from an FC leg found a Curzon player whom both benches were convinced was offside even from the original pass. Sadly there were two dissenting voices and they belonged to the referee and his assistant. Curzon following basic rules of playing to the whistle reacted fastest and via a pass to a supporting player more centrally placed the ball found the net.

If blame for that goal could be transferred, there could be no such luck for the remainder of the half. The second and third goals both came after several chances to clear the ball from the penalty area. The fourth goal came from a move that began with an FC United free kick on the edge of the Ashton box. It deflected off the wall for a throw close to the corner flag and somehow possession was quickly lost from the throw and Curzon broke the length of the field for an easy finish. A fifth came shortly before half time at the end of a slightly shorter but equally unchallenged break.

To give some credit to the reds it is not that the action was all at the one end but whilst the reds got behind the Curzon back four more than once, the finishing was as indecisive as the defending with Cameron Mason in the home goal dominating his penalty area.

It had rained throughout the night but FC United emerged for the second half with dry hair and gave an infinitely more disciplined performance. Indeed the marking was so much improved that it is hard to recall the home side getting a shot on target in the second half. It looked, for a good twenty minutes as if the same was going to be true of the FC United attack until a neat move involving Will Shawcross and Reuben Dass was finished with a delightful chip from Dean Hope from outside the box, over Mason and into the corner of the goal. Shawcross was the provider again with ten minutes remaining as Francesco Frangillo scored a second from the edge of the box
