FC Women celebrate 100 games with 8-0 dominance of Egerton FC
In the team’s 100th competitive game since it all began on Broadhurst Playing Fields back on 2nd September 2012 with a 10-0 victory over Uppermill Ladies when incredibly, 5 of Sunday’s team were involved back then also: Amy Gillingham (Capt), Amy Vyas, Adora Yau, Olivia Greenhalgh & Beth Tattersall. The currently injured Beth Hayes also starred in that first match and was on the score sheet and we wish Beth a speedy and complete recovery from her recent knee operation.
Sunday’s 8-0 victory over Egerton FC Ladies was graced with first half strikes from Kirsty Chambers, Jess Battle & Chloe Wild. Despite it taking a while to add to the tally in the second half, largely due to the excellent keeping of Hannah Holloway and the legion of defenders in front of her, the reds kept plugging away. Four goals in six minutes; 2 from Chambers, another for Wild and 1 for Amy Vyas, saw off any further resistance before Chambers notched her 4th and the game’s 8th and final goal in stoppage time.
Egerton got the game underway but United were straight on the attack with Wild forcing Holloway into a good block; the loose ball cannoning to the left edge of the area where Chambers drove it towards the near post. Despite the recovering keeper getting a hand to the ball the power in the shot carried it over the line with the game 3 minutes old.
Olivia Greenhalgh surged down the right delivering a ball into the area for Battle to flick on as Wild looked to capitalise with the ball running back into the path of Battle whose deflected shot went wide for a corner. Resulting from the set piece, Beth Tattersall’s shot glanced the post and Battle pounced on the loose ball, wriggled past two defenders firing across Holloway into the bottom corner to double United’s lead on 12 minutes registering her 5th goal in her first three games for the club.
Incessant United possession, slick incisive passing and relentless pressure dashed time and again, against rugged Egerton defending with the reds resorting to long range efforts from Chambers, Jess McCarrick, Greenhalgh and Wild which Holloway was more than equal to. At the mid-point of the half, Chelsea Patient was allowed to carry the ball from deep in her own half to the edge of the Egerton area as the visiting defence sat ever deeper. The defender crafted a lofted ball into the area where Wild acrobatically hooked it goalward with Holloway once more being the equal of the shot.
On a rare foray into United territory, Egerton earned a free kick just past the centre circle which Fran Davies headed clear to spark another red raid as Chambers fed Battle who slotted the ball through to Wild. From a tightening angle, Wild fired a powerful shot through the raised arms of Holloway and into the roof of the net as the half entered its last 10 minutes. Tattersall, Wild and Battle saw repeated shots blocked as Egerton grateful scrambled the ball clear in the last meaningful moments of a one sided half.
United, kicking towards the Lightbowne Road end, got the second half underway and if anything Egerton adopted a more defensive stance, no doubt in an attempt at damage limitation. With Amy Gillingham a very vocal but virtual spectator at the St Mary’s Road End, her team mates were largely camped in the Egerton half looking for the elusive 4th goal.
On many occasions, Holloway was proving a most effective last line of defence as United changed things from the bench between the hour and 65 minutes with an almost immediate and devastating impact. From the 71st to the 77th minute United bagged 4 goals as admirable Egerton resistance finally crumbled. Chambers began the spell after Wild had forced another excellent save from Holloway at the expense of a corner which resulted in Wild hitting the bar and as the ball came back across the edge of the area, Chambers had time to take a touch and fire low past Holloway from 20 yards.
Within 4 minutes Battle showed excellent close control in the area forcing Holloway into a brilliant double save but Wild was not to be denied, smashing the loose ball into the back of the net from close range for her second and United’s 5th of the game.
Just a minute later Vyas found herself in space in the area and curled a shot into the bottom corner beyond an unsighted Holloway and this was followed within 60 seconds by Chambers’ hatrick strike and 100th FC career goal as she pounced on a Vyas shot that cannoned down off the bar spinning back into the area for the Captain to slot home her milestone goal earning her a Golden Boot Trophy presentation from the fans after the game.
Sensing the importance of goal difference, United continued to press and a fine strike by Morgan McWhirter forced Holloway into another super save but two minutes into stoppage time Vyas fed Chambers who smashed a low shot past Holloway at her near post for her 101st FC career goal prompting referee Steve Darlow to blow for time from the restart.
Next Sunday as reward for knocking out Blackpool a couple of weeks ago, the Women travel to Lancashire to take on Sir Tom Finney FC in the quarter final of the Argyle Cup before heading to Leigh RMI a week later in the Manchester FA County Cup. At the time of writing we have no game on 26th February but keep an eye on the website for any fixture changes. Thank You.

Kirsty capped a memorable afternoon with her 3rd goal in the game being her 100th in just 90 appearances in the club’s 100th competitive game; a very impressive record by any standard at any level.
