Match Report
FC United, perhaps suffering a cup hangover from last weekend, dropped two precious points away to Curzon Ashton after coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at the Tameside Stadium sports complex.

The hosts, held the lead at the break courtesy of Megan Stapleton with Shellby Wolstencroft snatching the equaliser with 25 minutes to go. Although United largely dominated possession and created the majority of chances, Curzon worked hard and looked to hit the reds on the break. Their keeper, Alex Moon, enjoyed an excellent game thwarting several goal attempts which no doubt contributed to the reds being uncharacteristically wayward with their decisive passes and shots at goal.

Curzon got things underway attacking down the left but stopped in their tracks by Shannon Hayes who launched United forward as the attack switched flanks to Allisha Marsh whose cross was deflected behind with the corner being well cleared.

On seven minutes, fluent football from back to front by FC saw Jess McCarrick finding Abbie Carrington, on to Marsh who passed infield to Adora Yau feeding Hayes on the right whose shot drifted wide of Moon’s goal.

Curzon produced a lofted ball over FC’s defence and Olivia Gannon was quickly off her line to clear decisively but injured her ankle in the process and after a spell of treatment was forced to withdraw passing the captaincy to Fran Davies as Chloe Williams took up station between the sticks on the quarter hour.

After the stoppage United broke down the left; Marsh ran onto a Carrington pass surging beyond her defender, unleashing a fierce drive that Moon saved superbly at the expense of a corner. The first corner was defended behind with the successive one resulting in Amy Vyas heading goalward with Moon saving well again.

Morgan McWhirter broke down United’s right flank slipping a pass to Vyas who played a superb ball to Marsh going one on one with Moon who once again thwarted an almost certain goal, saving well with her legs.

Curzon broke away and forced a corner which was well delivered for Amy Smith to force Williams into a good save. A minute later and the home side punished some uncharacteristic sloppy defending with a through ball finding Stapleton unmarked in the United area and her looping shot from 12 yards deceived Williams clipping the inside of the post just under the cross bar, nestling in the back of the net on 25 minutes.

Despite exerting consistent pressure, United increasingly resorted to shots from range, the best from Vyas but rarely troubled Moon during the remainder of the half as Curzon held their lead into the break.

United signalled their intentions from the start of the second half with Marsh volleying over the bar within 30 seconds of the restart. Vyas charged down a hurried clearance by Moon with the ball rolling agonisingly wide of the Curzon goal. Wolstencroft dragged a shot wide a minute later and Curzon broke away and forced a corner which amounted to nothing as the game was halted for another stoppage.

From the resumption of play Vyas played in Kirsty Chambers who beat the keeper and with the goal at her mercy former FC United defender Georgie Jany (Tindell) put in a remarkable challenge clearing the ball off Chambers’ toe and away from danger just three yards from goal.

A long clearance by Williams was inadvertently flicked on by the Curzon midfield and substitute Jade Parker was through on goal with her shot skewing wide as yet another chance to equalise went begging. However persistence paid off and Parker swung in a 64th minute corner with Wolstencroft reacting quickest to stab the ball past Moon from six yards to level the scores. Curzon came out of their defensive shell and responded well with Stapleton crossing for Smith whose looping shot was comfortably held by Williams.

The pacey Amelia Flood enjoyed a good tussle with United fullback McWhirter (who enjoyed a good first 90 minutes for the reds), resulting in a corner for the host which was well cleared by Yau but the ball came back via Flood whose shot was just wide. Olivia Greenhalgh fired just over the Curzon bar from the edge of the ‘D’ as both sides looked for a winner.

FC earned a corner which was cleared and as Fran Davies looked to recycle the ball back into the danger area she was clearly fouled and dispossessed on half way but the referee waved play on and Curzon pressed forward earning a free kick in a dangerous position with Abbie Carrington being dismissed for dissent after the earlier foul on Davies had not been given.

With a player advantage it was Curzon who came closest to taking maximum points with Flood curling an effort from the left that glanced off the United bar. Wolstencroft chipped from range and with Moon beaten her effort just cleared the bar in the last meaningful action of a hard fought contest.

Next Sunday FC’s Women welcome opening day opponents Warrington Wolverines once again, this time in the Argyle Cup. Get yourselves to our football ground.
