Match Report
With Curzon Ashton having secured the Lancashire League South Division title on Thursday with a 4-0 win at Stalybridge there was only the formality of completing the fixture to play for. Unfortunately no-one told Stockport that. There were highlights for FC fans watching, a Chris Hill hat trick and a delicate chip from Jack Ward but those would be easily lost in the overall analysis of the game.
1st Minute – Stockport make it 1-0. Rory Patterson had done it after a Silsden goal but this was straight from the kick-off. The second touch of the game sailing straight over the keepers head.
2-0 Third minute – A fall in the box adjudged by the referee to have been courtesy of a clipped heel, one so delicate that even his assistant; level with the play didn’t see it. The penalty calmly despatched.
2-1 seventh minute – From a corner, Jack Ward crosses for Chris Hill to slot home at the far post.
3-1 Thirteenth Minute – A hopeful ball from the Stockport right-back into the space ahead of him was chased down and crossed into the middle for a straight forward finish.
4-1 23rd minute – Man of the match, Stockport’s George West is allowed to cut in from the left wing and fire across goal and in to the far corner.
4-2 29th minute – A reprise of the first FC goal as the Ward/Hill combination works again.
5-2 33rd minute – Another swift move from front to back, cuts straight through the home defence.
6-2 38th minute – The FC United defence is bypassed again and another free strike on goal is completed.
7-2 56th minute – Stockport are again allowed to shoot without challenge and score.
7-3 57th minute – At last a positive piece of play by FC United, a corner from the right goes beyond the far post. The ball back across goal reaches Jack Ward who lobs the Stockport keeper.
8-3 72nd minute – Stockport at least have to go down the right wing and cross but again the finish is too easy.
9-3 88th minute – Another Stockport move from back to front receives little or no challenge.
9-4 90th minute – Chris Hill completes his hat-trick, converting a Will Shawcross delivery.
The ball is returned to the centre circle, Stockport re-start the game and the referee blows for full time.
