Match Report
FC United Reserves travelled to Hurst Cross to take on Ashton United and came away with a 6-0 win. Connor Martin scored twice with Robson Buckley, Paulo Mendes, Frank van Gils and Cameron Horner also finding the net.

The final tally of six for the visitors is always to be celebrated but in truth, such was their dominance that it could easily have been more as the home side threw everything but Ben Drew at their guests. Their reliance on playing a high defensive line and relying on an offside flag worked on numerous occasions but as the game wore on it was less effective as FC made their runs from deeper and at better angles.

The home side made a bright start, Matty Smith fired just wide after two minutes, unfortunately for the home side that was the end result of most of their shooting. FC United took the lead after just eight minutes as the pattern of the game emerged. A ball beyond the Ashton defence was perfect for Connor Martin to run on to. It seemed from the bench at the far end of the pitch that his shot was surprisingly wayward, little did we know that he had unselfishly teed up Robson Buckley to fire home. The Ashton players looked pleadingly to the officials but no flag was forthcoming for either pass.

Ashton had a chance to equalise five minutes later as the referee decided that having gained no advantage inside the visitors penalty area he would award a free kick just outside. That effort was deflected for a corner which was comfortably dealt with. From then on, whilst Ashton United never truly gave up the chances were heading mostly towards their goal.

Martin hit the post on 14 minutes and Buckley had two chances in one move soon after as Martin and Will Harney both put crosses in for him. The remainder of the first half was largely a tale of frustration as the co-ordination between forward run and pass was lacking and referee’s assistant’s flag got the exercise Ashton had hoped for earlier.

Paulo Mendes was the fulcrum of many moves that did get through on goal so it was a fitting reward that he got the second five minutes before half time as Buckley played him through. A couple of Ashton defenders got close enough to attempt challenges but he was stong enough to hold them off and fire across the unfortunate Lewis Hindley in to corner of the home goal.

Frank van Gils scored the third after 54 minutes when put through by Dean Hope, having already been thwarted twice by Hindley. He was through again ten minutes later, lifting the ball over Hindley, who had dived at his feet in vain, Martin was on hand to pounce and score the fourth.

The fifth and sixth were combination plays by two hat trick heroes, Cameron Horner in the FA Youth Cup and Martin in the previous reserve game. Martin set up Horner for the fifth on 66 minutes with the roles reversed in the 78th minute for the sixth. That was a cue for an argument amongst the Ashton defence and whilst it must be left for their coaching team to pick up the pieces it was hard not to have some sympathy for the Ashton keeper.

Martin had, moments before the final goal, set up van Gils who hit the post and it would be unfair if not completely impossible to list the unsuccessful chances. It would be fair to say that everyone wanted to score and would deserve a share in any man of the match award.

Ashton United did have the ball in the FC United net near the end of the game as defensive complacency presented them with a chance. Fortunately the offside flag was raised and the prized FC United clean sheet was maintained.
