Match Report
Thoughts at Broadhurst Park turned to Cup action as ther Reserves took on Hyde in the Lancashire League Cup. A first round first leg tie against Hyde United ended in disappointment as a Michael Boateng hat-trick saw the visitors take a 3-0 advantage into the second leg.

Hyde had been beaten by the same score in the league, but they returned with a stronger and more disciplined back line and gave the reds little opportunity to repeat the flair that had defeated Ashton United a week earlier.

FC United had most of the possession but only really got past the Hyde back four with set pieces. Paulo Mendes headed a Charlie Doyle free kick wide on 15 minutes and on half an hour another Doyle free kick flashed across the goal without anyone getting a touch. Dean Hope was only just wide from around 30 yards out five minutes before the break.

In the meantime Boateng was announcing his intentions as Hyde looked to counter attack. A break from half way was eventually dealt with on 20 minutes but the lesson was not to be learnt. On 36 minutes a Hyde break found its way to Adam Jones on the right. His cross was headed home unchallenged. He was equally unmarked in first half stoppage time when the prescription was repeated from a Jones free kick. Early in the second half he headed home from a Robbie Todd cross.

Before the third goal FC United were denied a chance to pull a goal back five minutes into the second half. Frank van Gils had run on to a ball forward and touched it past Danny Whiting in the Hyde goal. Despite it looking inside the area the referee judged that contact had been outside the box. He also considered that the angle of the ball past Whiting meant the chance was not an obvious scoring opportunity and merely cautioned the Hyde keeper. The free kick was blocked by the Hyde wall and cleared.

Van Gils had a shot saved on the hour, Will Shawcross hit the post and Ben Potter got on the end of a VanGils free kick as the half progressed. Then Hyde had the ball in the net again but it was disallowed for a foul on Ben Jupp.

Van Gils had another effort cleared off the line as the game drew to a close but in truth FC United lacked something in front of goal throughout the game. The second leg is due to take place at Abbey Hey on Thursday, October 1st; kick off 7:45pm. Can the lads turn it round?
