Match Report
A late deflected goal that cannoned in off a clearance from goalkeeper Dave Carnell meant FC United lost 1-0 at North Ferriby on Saturday afternoon.

Danny Clark broke the deadlock in the 91st minute as a hardworking FC United team were robbed of a point at Grange Lane and remain 15th in the Vanarama National League North.

It was The Villagers who started the game the strongest but chances were few and far between, though the home side did have the first sight on goal when a header by Mark Gray was cleared by Sam Sheridan, making his FC debut.

A minute later, the hosts came close when a header from Danny Clarke dropped just beyond the far post. Just before the half hour, Carnell was called into action to palm out a long range Clarke shot.

As the half wore on, FC United did find their feet, Sam Madeley seeing a shot saved and a mix up saw Greg Daniels get behind the defence and round the keeper but he took too long on the ball and his cross was cleared.

On 38 minutes, Daniels was again involved as he ran into the box beating a couple of defenders before seeing his shot rattle the crossbar.

As with the first half, the second period started quietly though the battle between Carnell and Clarke continued with the custodian pulling off a superb point blank save from a smart turn and shot from the Ferriby forward.

On the hour mark, the Reds hit the woodwork again when a corner in saw a Chris Lynch shot blocked, the ball dropped to Tom Greaves who poked the ball goalwards only to see it hit the post and run away to safety.

FC were certainly seeing the majority of possession and a Jerome Wright run and cross found Daniels whose turn and shot was well saved by Adam Nicklin. With the last minute looming, FC United’s day in front of goal was summed up when a cross was missed by two players with an open goal gaping.

As time ran out, there was time for one last sting in the tail as a ball over the top was cleared by Carnell, unfortunately the ball hit Clarke at point blank range and rolled into the empty net for a cruel winner.

The defeat was harsh on FC United who probably played the best they had all season and were deserving of a point at the very least.

Website man of the match - Sam Sheridan. A very assured debut, he was up and down the pitch, combative in the tackle and used the ball well.
