Match Report
A stiff test was expected as AFC Fylde brought their reserve side to the Nicholls Campus and theHome side got the better of the encounter, goals from Michael Brewster, Tunde Owolabi and John Pritchard were the meat in a sandwich by Aaron Fleming giving them a 3-2 win.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks earning two corners in as many minutes and Fleming having a shot saved on eight minutes. That did spark the reds into action although a Dean Hope lob which cleared both keeper and bar on five minutes could have given FC an earlier lead. An 11th minute corner was met with a deft flick by Pritchard that went just wide, the game flowing from end to end; both keepers making good saves midway through the half.

It seemed certain that goals would come and as we passed the half hour mark they came. Firstly, Fleming, who was able to receive long passes forward and create a threat all game rounded Ben Jupp in the home goal to slide home but the assistants’ flag was already raised for offside. The relief was short lived as Fleming broke a minute later and the visitors took the lead. It was not to last though, as two minutes later FC were awarded a free kick for a foul on Frank van Gils about 25 yards out. Brewster hit the kick past the Fylde wall and what seemed an easy save for Tom Goodwin somehow found its way over the line. There were further chances for both sides as the half drew to a close but the score stayed at 1-1.

The second half was more of the same although FC United did take charge of the game with two goals in the first ten minutes. The half had barely started when left back Jacob Holt played an inch perfect pass over the Fylde back line for Owolabi to run on to and score. It was 3-1 five minutes later; Fylde had their own moment of pressure with two corners in quick succession before a move upfield was concluded by Pritchard after a 1-2 with van Gils. That was quickly followed by a chances for him to make it four with a burst through the defence but a shot off target and then a 30 yard shot saved.

Fylde came back into the game on 64 minutes as Fleming was able to punish hesitant defending as the ball was played forward for him to chase. Five minutes later he was just wide with a shot from a corner and on 73 minutes, Ryan Vaughan was denied an equaliser by an offside flag when finishing a free kick. Brewster had several chances to repeat his free kick goal but first a shot was deflected by the Fylde wall on to the post and then a fine save at the near post denied him.

The closing minutes were dominated by Fylde as they pressed forward in search of an equaliser, hitting the bar with a header from a long throw after 87 minutes and even Goodwin venturing forward for a free kick deep into stoppage time. FC had the chance to make him pay for that venture forward but having cleared to the half way line a shot by Dean Holt failed to find the target. The game finished 3-2 and FC United regain top spot in the table.
