Match Report

Last Wednesday, in the season’s last home league game, FC’s women took on Beechfield United Ladies at their Abraham Moss training base in torrential conditions in their first league outing since 19 January. First-half strikes from Kirsty Chambers and Beth Tattersall were enough to secure a 2-0 victory and cement their runners-up spot in the league for the second successive season. Beechfield put in tremendous effort highlighted by the fact that centre half Chelsea Patient was the player of the game for FC United.

The league encounter only served as a dress rehearsal for Sunday’s League Cup semi final clash on neutral territory in Blackley, North Manchester, where FC, buoyed by the return from suspension of Jade Parker, broke down stiff early resistance from Beechfield to end up comfortable 5-0 victors. First-half strikes from Charlie Evans, Jade Parker and an unfortunate Beechfield own goal were supplemented by goals from Leah Hartshorne and Beth Tattersall in the second half. FC also had a penalty saved and a Kirsty Chambers’ goal direct from a corner disallowed for a push on the keeper as the game drew to a close. In front of 40 spectators, FC’s player of the game was Aimee Cooke, who served the cause tirelessly throughout and was unlucky not to bag at least one goal herself.

On the adjacent pitch, league champions Middleton Athletic despatched Chorltonians 5-1 in the other semi-final setting up a mouth-watering final at Salford City’s Moor Lane ground this coming Sunday, 4 May with a 2pm kick-off. Get yourselves to that football ground.
