Match Report

FC United started their season in the Galaxy Lancashire League with a 5-0 win against Thackley at the Nichols Campus this afternoon. Goals came from Theo Kidd, Jay Walcott, Mike Taylor and two from Jon Poizer.

The first half was fairly even, Thackley, who were first and last in the last two seasons making the brightest start with two corners in the first five minutes before FC slowly worked their way into the game. A good move on 12 minutes saw Smethurst and Poizer combine for Taylor to fire just wide before Jay Walcott provided the first test for Keen in the visitors goal.

The reds continued to pass well but in truth both defences were in command until the 38th minute when Theo Kidd broke clear of the Thackley back line and chipped over the advancing Keen and into the net.

The second half was a different story as FC United dominated and provided a scoreline to reflect this. The second goal came from a penalty as Taylor was clipped by a raised foot as he tried to create space in the area, Walcott sent the keeper the wrong way.

Jon Poizer then became the outstanding player of the rest of the game, a free kick in the 70th minute was saved but the keeper was given no chance five minutes later; Jordan Dainty passed down the touchline for Taylor who twisted and turned by the goal line, creating space for a cross that Poizer converted. Favours were returned in the 85th minute when Poizer was provider for Taylor to make it four. Poizer completed the scoring two minutes later with a 25 yard drive. Further efforts could have added to the score as the game drew to a close, Keen blocking shots from Smethurst and Poizer. In truth as much as FC deserved the win more goals would have been harsh on a Thackley side that are determined not to repeat last season’s bottom place finish.
