FC United beaten at home by Blyth Spartans - full report

FC United were soundly beaten by a well drilled Blyth Spartans outfit 3-1 at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday evening courtesy of two goals from Dan Maguire either side of a Sean Reid effort, with Jason Gilchrist getting one back for the Reds.

The game started brightly with both teams playing some good neat football, in particular Joel Logan marauding down FC United’s right flank, leading to a couple of shots from Connor McCarthy and Jason Hooper missing the target. The Spartans earned a succession of corners as they in turn pressured the United goal but again they could not find the breakthrough.

In stark contrast to Saturday’s game against Leamington, the tempo didn’t let up. Logan’s selection almost bearing fruit with several crosses into the box that just needed someone on the end of them.

Spartans number 11 Robbie Dale began to have more of an influence on the left wing with most of Blyth’s good work involving him. It was Dale’s cross from left on 37 minutes that led to Maguire receiving the ball just inside the area, he made himself half a yard and scored in the corner for 1-0.

With six minutes of the half left the game took a bizarre twist when the referee’s assistant had to quit through injury. An appeal over the PA system for a qualified replacement from the crowd was answered and the game resumed after a lengthy stoppage, but with no further chances.

Blyth started the second half on the front foot, Maguire shooting across goal in the opening minutes. United pressed on looking for the equaliser and after some good work of their own, Tom Greaves had the ball in the net only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

The away side then took hold of the game, Dale again probing down left, his cross finding Reid unmarked in the box. He slotted the ball home to put his side 2-0 up on the hour mark.

Logan, still looking dangerous every time he had the ball, attacked again and fired a cross from the left which substitute Gilchrist headed home to give United a glimmer of hope. The home side went looking for the equaliser, forcing a couple of corners but to no avail.

The momentum seemed to shift back to the away side after Michael Connor and Joel Senior received yellow cards in quick succession. Entering the last 10 minutes of the game, Maguire fashioned his own chance and sent a rocket into Lloyd Allinson’s top right corner. It was goal worthy of winning any game.

Both teams still played with attacking intent up to the final whistle but there were no further chances.

Website man of the match: Magnificent performance from Joel Logan who never stopped running all game, proving a threat every time he had the ball.
