Aviva Community Fund - Please Vote for two FC Community ProjectsFC United’s community team have two projects that have made it to the voting stage for funding through Aviva’s Community Fund.

The first one is FC United’s sporting memories group, which is a weekly session for older adults to assist in combating Alzheimer’s, depression, social isolation, loneliness. It is a social group that uses sport as a tool for reminiscence therapy, lasting 90 minutes per session.

Tapping in to the rich history and heritage of sport in Manchester, the project helps to rekindle fond memories of watching or playing sport and sparks many debates and conversations of great victories and performances, legendary players, magical moments in matches and of the course those moments of defeat that every sports fan knows only too well.

In partnership with the charity, the Sporting Memories Network (charity number 1154474), we support older people across Greater Manchester living with dementia, depression and loneliness by engaging them in social activities and helping them to recall memories of watching or playing sport. By sharing memories of sporting moments and tapping into a passion for sport the project helps people to connect with others and with their past, reawakening positive thoughts and feelings that otherwise remain hidden away.

Secondly we have our new Wellbeing Project. The background of this project has derived from discussions with Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust. They approached FC United to work with 25 mental health service users who are already established as a group. This group has been engaged in football for over a year and they were looking for ways to enhance the service the group receives.

The objectives are as follows;

To engage 25 mental health service users in football coaching activities using FC United’s 3g pitches and with a FC United coach assigned to the group.
To ensure all service users complete training certificates in the following training courses delivered locally;

a. First Aid
b. Food Hygiene
c. Social Enterprise Training

We will then work with the group to establish a social enterprise on match day that all service users could rotate working in - allowing for employment experience whilst ensuring the project is sustainable as the income generated from the social enterprise will contribute to the costs of pitch hire and training for the group to continue on a weekly basis with their rehabilitation.

The group will be inclusive and open to new recruits through the mental health service.
