Reserves lose at Buxton

FC United Reserves kicked off their league campaign with a visit to Buxton. Despite dominating possession and chances created the last were beaten by a home side that were on average some two or three years older. First half strikes from Deren Bozkurt for Buxton was countered with a strike from Rico Gomes at the start of the second half. Sadly what would have been a more than deserved equaliser never came and the home side won 2-1.

Early play was almost all in the Buxton half, Shawcross, Gomes and Jones all tested the home keeper before Buxton took the lead with a ninth minute counter attack when Bozkurt broke free to slot home. He doubled the league five minutes later, punishing defensive hesitation before scoring.

The best FC United move of the half came three minutes later when Shawcross found Gomes and a powerful header crashed down off the bar and was scrambled away.

Buxton came close to adding to their lead on the half hour when a cross was fired into the box, from the bench a defensive header flew across and uncomfortably close to the goal before drifting out for a corner. Steenson drew a fine save from Barlow in the home goal shortly afterwards but half time was reached with no further score.

The second half was scarcely two minutes old when Gomes scored a goal of the season contender. Set up by Shawcross he fired into the top corner from at least thirty yards out.

It would be unfair to suggest that Buxton didn’t carry a threat, Bozkurt could have completed his hat-trick five minutes later with a shot that was deflected over the bar and had a shot saved by Sajjad at his near post on the hour. However most of the running was made by the reds. Shawcross, Gomes, Degue, Brown, Fuller and Hill all tested the Buxton Keeper but for the most part it was backs to the wall defending that restricted the reds to probing at the edge of the penalty area.

If it is true that you learn more from your defeats than any kind have win that the possession would have justified the all in all, it was a perfect lesson for the lads in what to expect in the season ahead and the challenges they need to face up to if they are to progress within the club.
