Match Report
In a weekend with good news in short supply for those of a Mancunian red persuasion, it rolled round to Sunday at St Brides with the FC United Youth Team taking on Altrincham and emerging with a 3-0 victory to clinch the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division League title. The reds have 50 points with 2 games to go. The only team that could otherwise have caught them have six games to play with a maximum possible points total of 49.

FC started brightly and gave an indication of the tempo that they wanted the game played at when in the fourth minute Jay Walcott chased a pass back to Adam Reid the Altrincham goalkeeper forcing him to slice his clearance kick out for a throw. In the first 15 minutes Jay, Jake Haslam and Scott Cheetham had all come close. Scott was particularly unfortunate when he exchanged passes with Dylan Moloney in a short corner routine; saw a shot heading for the top corner, turned away by Reid for another corner.

The home side took the lead after 25 minutes; Jay passed to Dylan who returned the compliment and Jay struck sweetly into the bottom corner. Further chances were spurned with Scott Cheetham firing narrowly wide and Reid making a double save from an FC corner. The second did come after 35 minutes when Ryan Lyons broke down the right wing before crossing low across the face of the Altrincham goal. Jake Haslam applied the finishing touch at the far post. The rest of the first half passed with FC looking to finish the game but without finding a final touch.

With half time words of encouragement the reds started the second half at a high tempo, forcing five corners in the first ten minutes as the Altrincham goal was resolutely defended with several goal-line clearances, Matthew Tierney, Scott, Jake, Jay and Dylan all unfortunate not to add to the score.

It was perhaps surprising that the third goal did not come until the 73rd minute. Ryan had come across to the left wing to take an in swinging free kick. Several red shirts were queuing up at the far post amongst them Obied Elghreaw provided the decisive header. It was almost 4-0 soon after when an Altrincham defender was thankful to see a challenge fly in the direction of his own goal but eventually just wide of the post. There were other near misses as substitute Jimmy Green had a shot saved and Ryan saw a long range effort drift wide, causing coach Darren to reminisce about his own career and why he too played at full-back.

Altrincham had perhaps their best chance of the game deep into injury time when allowed a free header from a corner, but were unable to find the target and the game finished 3-0 and on pitch celebrations ensued before adjourning to the dressing room. That concluded the season at St Brides although two away games remain, Prescot Cables await next Sunday at the Elton Head Leisure Centre in St Helens and the return against Mossley at Seal Park now put back a week to Tuesday May 3rd. The lads now challenged to play as Champions and close out the season without a league defeat.
