Match Report
A goal from Simon Carden and two more from Carl Lomax were enough to overcome a double blow from Marine in the first half, giving FC United another important win in the push for a play-off spot.

Going into the game, United would surely be hoping to continue with excellent recent form, fielding the same starting eleven who played in Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Ashton United.

It was a cagey opening to the game with neither side offering any clear cut attempts on goal and both being cautious in defence. Marine had a chance to go ahead inside the first 20 minutes when a ball across the box from Karl O’Donnell was met by Joe Doyle who had a shot on goal which went wide.

Lomax then had a fantastic chance for FC when he forced a good save from Sean Lake in the Marine goal. Lomax picked up a ball in from Jerome Wright just inside the area, turned and struck an excellent effort on goal, provoking a one-handed tip over the bar from Lake.

The Reds took the lead on 33 minutes courtesy of Simon Carden. Phil Marsh played the ball in from the right and Carden was able to take advantage of a mix up between the Marine keeper and defence to nip in and blast the ball home from short range.

United’s lead however was to be short lived when Marine dealt a double blow a couple of minutes after the restart. Shaun Tuck crossed a ball from the left wing into the near post ahead where Peter Cumiskey got ahead of Adam Tong to squeeze the ball between Sam Ashton and the post.

FC barely had chance to pick themselves up when Wayne McDermott sent Marine into the lead just a minute later. The number 3 was able to beat Tunji Moses on the left and volleyed the ball over the head of Ashton from the corner of the area.

As the half drew to a close, there was a scare in the United area in which Marine had a penalty claim waved away, before a long clearance was picked up by Lomax. Strong play from the centre-forward saw him able to beat the defender and maintain his balance to slot the ball past the keeper who failed to close down quickly enough, leaving the score line level at the break.

In the opening stages of the second half, Lake produced a string of good saves to deny FC. Simon Carden found himself through on goal, for the keeper to make a good save which fell to the feet of Jerome Wright on the edge of the area. Jerome’s goal bound half volley was beaten away once more by the keeper. Wright then followed the rebound up with a header which Lake was able to hold onto.

The Reds regained the lead once more just past the hour mark following good build up play from the United side. Simon Carden sent the ball into the back post and Lomax picked up the clearance on the edge of the area and turned inside to strike the ball into the back of the net.

Just minutes after the goal, Carlos Roca was replaced by Adam Carden on the right. Following good play from FC, Danny Warrender picked up the ball on the edge of the area and took it inside to hit a hard shot off the keeper’s left hand post.

Nicky Platt then made his second appearance after returning to the club when he replaced Phil Marsh. Platt had a chance to score when he sent an excellent attempt on goal just wide of Lake’s right hand post.

An injury time substitution for United saw an in-form Simon Carden being replaced by Danny Williams. The Reds fought on to the final whistle, defending well to keep Marine at bay and continuing to push forward. FC United will undoubtedly be pleased with another vital victory in their bid for promotion and will be hoping to build on this on Wednesday night when they face Ossett Town at Gigg Lane.
