Match Report
Early Festive Cheer as Victorious Women out fox Vixens

In their first game under the management of Luke Podmore, the team adapted superbly to a difficult pitch against awkward, effective opposition whilst adapting to some new ideas and tactics to record a crucial 2-0 away victory going into the festive break.

An early headed goal from Chelsea Patient in the third minute was followed by a protracted goalless spell before Beth Tattersall lit up the gathering twilight gloom to make the game safe, just seven minutes from time.

A positive start on a spongy surface by FC United saw Allisha Marsh force a corner inside the opening minute. Tattersall delivered a low ball along the bye line taking the return pass from Kirsty Chambers before chipping in a cross to the back post where Patient headed back across goal as the home defence scrambled the ball clear before conceding another corner.

This time Tattersall, Jade Parker and Chambers combined; Patient meeting her captain’s cross perfectly placing her header over Katie Jones and into the back of the net on three minutes notching United’s 50th league goal in the first half of the campaign.

FC’s incisive play continued with Chambers crossing again and this time Abbie Carrington rose highest to head on goal with Jones catching well beneath her bar.

Gradually however, Northwich Vixens sensed that their intense work rate and pressing was increasingly frustrating United with Parker in particular being thwarted on numerous occasions either out wide or when through on goal. On 20 minutes Chambers cut the ball back into the path of Marsh whose drive from outside the area narrowly cleared the Vixens’ bar and as the half reached its midpoint Cathy Dutton fired a speculative effort from 30 yards which drifted harmlessly wide of Amy Gillingham’s goal.

Fran Davies rolled a ball into Olivia Greenhalgh who lofted a pass over the defence into the path of Chambers who flicked the ball beyond the advancing Jones but just narrowly wide of the far post.

Northwich launched a raid down the left wing resulting in a powerful shot on goal which Gillingham did well to parry away for a corner. The ensuing set piece caused chaos and a handball appeal in the FC area before Mia Holden eventually cleared the danger.

Digging deep, United ended the half strongly with Chambers going close on two occasions after persistent pressing by Holden, Marsh, Greenhalgh and Tattersall.

United started the second half as Northwich harried and pressed in the firm belief they could get something from the game and the reds had to dig deeper fashioning an early chance after good work down the right by Morgan McWhirter, Patient, Marsh and Tattersall; the build up climaxing with a Greenhalgh strike that was well held by Jones.

Northwich pressure down the left earned the home side a corner which was dangerously delivered and palmed beyond her back post by Gillingham on the stretch with Chambers carrying the loose ball up to half way and out of harm’s way. Northwich pressed high again and almost profited as Davies played a pass back to Gillingham who dwelt on it too long, being grateful for the cover and quick thinking of McWhirter to clear the danger.

United looked to press forward themselves, Holden clipping a delightful ball through to Tattersall whose drive found the side netting. Chambers fired into the opposite side after latching onto a long clearance by Gillingham minutes later with Northwich responding through Rebecca Francis-Jones; her 25 yard shot bouncing awkwardly in front of Gillingham who did well to hold on to the ball.

The decisive moment of the half and ultimately the game was played out with seven minutes remaining. Chambers, in a trademark run, surged down the left racing to the bye line before cutting the ball back beyond the dive of Jones, beyond the slide of Wolstencroft but perfectly into the path of Tattersall who fired into the roof of the net at the back post to seal the victory. Creditably, Northwich pressed to the final whistle which came after a free kick just clearing the FC wall and cross bar from the edge of the area.

There now follows a brief festive break from which the women make a return to action at Broadhurst Park on 8th January 2017 when they welcome Altrincham FC Ladies a week after the men of both clubs compete in the New Years day fixture. Get yourselves down to our football ground.
