Match Report
FC United are through to the second round of the Manchester Premier Cup after beating Glossop North End 6-5 on penalties on Tuesday night.

Nine hundred and eighty fans came. Nine hundred and eighty in the dark and in the rain to Broadhurst Park to watch a competitive 2-2 draw in normal time.

Side by side and flag by flag they stood in the SMRE, Glossop Blue and Manchester Red, noisy and expectant, looking for chances, looking for goals, they would not be disappointed.

They saw a fine match, an attacking, exciting match which climaxed in the lottery of a penalty shoot out. 12 yards, one-on-one, deciding the fate of winners and losers.

Changes were abound for the triumphant Emirates FA Cup Saturday side, 11 changes in all, new blood, old blood, returning blood.

Caution was launched to the leaf felling wind at the earliest point possible as both sets of players set out to satisfy the appetite of the goal hungry fans. FC attacked. North End stood firm and defiant. North End hassled and harried the FC players, hassled and harried them into mistakes. Stott and Bailey could have scored before 5 minutes were up. Could have, but did not.

After 10 minutes there was no real threat from FC United. Glossop were in control, still hassling, still harrying and still standing firm. Norton and Murray danced and pressed but the final ball was missing.

Ashley Mulholland was up for the game, up for it like nobodies business, quick and skillful he we was the spear in Glossop’s attacking policy, looking to get behind the FC defence and whip in crosses to Bailey, Lugsden and anyone else who cared to bomb forward. Twice the ball skipped across the FC goalmouth, twice it bounced in the area and twice it skipped through when any touch would have broken the deadlock.

Glossop were creating good chances. FC were shooting from range. It was an even game, an exciting game, a game that just needed a goal. And goals it would get.

FC start to win corners, 3 of them, one after another. The final corner is cleared. A cross is whipped in, Craig Lindfield goes up with the defender, he wins it, the ball bounces, Norton is there, 6 yards out, frustrated and ready to pounce. Head over the ball, right foot. Smash. Top corner. 1-0. Norts is back.

Stung and hurting GNE attack and attack again, Mulholland again, a great cross again, no one is there again. Now GNE have corners, 2 of them, one after the other. But this time they go short, it’s laid off to Brizzel, he’s 25 yards out, he’s hitting one, he’s hitting the crossbar, GNE are hitting a brick wall.

At half time FC were in the lead, a precarious lead, perhaps a fortunate lead.

Composure from FC at the start of the second half, nice football and probing attacks come to nought. A quick break and another cross sails unfinished past Nick Culkin’s goalmouth.

Mulholland has been pegged. Chris Lynch is his constant companion on the pitch, he cannot drop in and turn anymore, he cannot cause such a threat anymore. Glossop are wavering, they know they should have scored by now. Are they thinking their chance has gone, are they struggling now their danger man has a new best friend.

FC are in no mood to ponder these psychological conundrums and pounce on the deflated Glossop. Ball into Norts 30 yards out, with the touch of a Swiss watchmaker he’s laid it off to Cooke, Cooke is quick, he’s spotted Lingfield surging forward again. no one else has, a cultured pass, an advancing keeper, a sublime finish. 2-0.

GNE react. They feel they can get at FC and they set about their task again.

Mulholland is fouled halfway in the United half, the free kick is drifted in, the FC defence are AWOL, Lugsden goes up, he gets a glance from his head, Culkin is rooted, GNE are back. 2-1.

Glossop are pushing, they should score, Martin Parker with a free header. Wide. Now Culkin is out of his box, Mulholland will try to lob him from 40 yards! With his head! He does not score.

Glossop are still harrying, still pushing, it breaks to Bailey, the FC tackle only puts him in the clear, he shoots. Good save Nick Culkin but Ed Moran is sniffing for any sign of a goal and it breaks kindly, open goal, he can’t miss. 2-2!

End to end the ball goes now, Defending has been shown the door and Attacking has been invited well and truly in. FC hit the bar, Glossop hit the bar, more chances for both sides to steal the win.

Goal-line scrambles. One of the most perplexing offside decisions I have ever seen robs GNE of a late winner. Bailey is 7 yards out with only Culkin to beat, surely now it’s over! But it’s only the ball that is over the bar as FC breathe again.

Full time. Penalties.

Lynch scores, Thurston scores, Cooke misses but Culkin saves, Walwyn scores, Stott scores, Brownhill scores, Cheetham scores, Martin Parker hits the post! It’s all over. A fine game, nine hundred and eighty fans had their moneys worth and FC United progress.

Website man of the Match - Craig Lindfield: Always dangerous when given the chance down the right, assist for Norton’s goal and finished with aplomb for his own.
