Match Report
FC’s Women earn first point on the road, away to Mersey Girls

Following two previous ‘pointless’ visits to Merseyside, United gained a hard earned point away to Mersey Girls on Sunday with a 2-2 draw in a game that was a credit to both sides. Despite having the majority of chances, FC’s women had to twice come from behind to earn the point with the home side taking the lead in the opening minutes and holding on until Kirsty Chambers equalised inside the last 20 minutes. The home side went ahead again from a free kick and as time was running out, Lucy Bonner grabbed the crucial equaliser from close range with just 2 minutes remaining.

FC, kicking up the slope in the first half, struggled to get into the game as the hosts started the brighter, winning three successive corners in the opening minutes. From the third set piece they opened their account as a dangerous corner cleared Chloe Williams and Tammie Cunningham stole in to head home unchallenged from close range on 4 minutes.

The setback spurred United into action and Beth Tattersall fed Liv Gannon who centred superbly with Leah Hartshorne heading just wide at the far post. On 10 minutes a combination of a fabulous double save from Frederika Pajonkova and frame of the goal denied Bonner and Tattersall and the pattern of the game was set.

On 25 minutes United were convinced they had equalised as Tattersall forced another good save and Gannon, following up, saw the keeper smother her effort with the striker convinced the ball was already over the line but protestations were waved away. Gannon and Beth Scholey hit the post as United kept pressing but it was the home side who almost doubled their lead forcing Williams into a good save under her bar following another excellent delivery from a corner in the last action of a frustrating first half.

Three minutes into the second half and substitute Chambers found Gannon who forced Pajonkova into another excellent save. The home side, detecting United were increasingly pressing for the equaliser were proving effective on the counter as the pace of Emma Morgan was utilised in behind Jess Tonge on several occasions but the defence covered each other well to minimise the threat. Breaking from the back, Jess McCarrick found Adora Yau who in turn slotted the ball to Tattersall on the right and her shot -cum- cross narrowly drifted beyond the far post. Aimee Cooke, on the overlap, put in a superb cross that Bonner almost connected with and a minute later Gannon looked certain to equalise when Pajonkova produced a magnificent one handed save onto the bar.

Beth Hayes joined the fray with Chambers swapping to the right wing and, within a minute of the change, United had their equaliser. Hayes floated a free kick left to right and Chambers worked an opening and fired an unstoppable left foot drive across the keeper and into the bottom corner. The home side went on the offensive and forced a free kick on the edge of the United area and up stepped the impressive Inayala Robinson- Greenridge to smash a shot low and hard past the wall and through a defender on the line to restore their lead on 76 minutes.

United responded well and, just when it looked like it was going to be ‘one of those games’, they won a free kick wide on the right that Chambers swung into the near post where a flicked Hartshorne header came off the bar with the keeper beaten and Bonner reacted quickest to force the ball home from a yard out with two minutes to go. Both teams closed the game out as referee Steve Sibley signalled the end of an epic encounter that was a real credit to all involved on both sides.

FC United’s Women are back at Broadhurst next Sunday, 8th November (2pm), to face 2nd placed Merseyrail Bootle. Your support is always much appreciated by the squad so come along and give them the boost from the sidelines that they so richly deserve.

FC Player of the game: Olivia Gannon – excellent performance, tremendous energy and but for a phenomenal display by Frederika Pajonkova in the home goal, would have had at least a hatrick to her name.
