Match Report
FC United’s second pool game in the Division 1 League Cup saw the visit of a depleted Heyside Ladies to FC United’s temporary Crumpsall base to face a full-strength home side. The first ten minutes of end to end action with no goals when the ten players from Heyside arguably enjoyed the best chances, gave no indication of the record breaking exploits of the next 80 minutes.

United went on to score 24 without reply, 16 of which were shared evenly by Shellby Wolstencroft and Feiruz Abdullahi setting a new goals per game record previously held by Abdullahi at seven. Captain Kirsty Chambers’ single strike in the first half extended her record of scoring in each of the last eight games, whilst the overall scoreline set a new club and league competition record.

Despite such a comprehensive victory, supported by a third consecutive clean sheet, Heyside deserve tremendous credit for their commitment and endeavour from first to last whistle and their attitude throughout was commendable. Making her first appearance in 12 months, keeper Molly Davis was superb and the scoreline belies some excellent saves she made throughout the game.

After an even start to the game United took control in a six minute first half spell as Beth Hayes opened the scoring on 13 minutes, coolly slotting her shot past the impressive Davis in the Heyside goal. Wolstencroft bagged the first two of her eight goal haul volleying home a Chambers corner on 14 minutes and curling in her second from the edge of the area three minutes later. Hayes had her brace on 19 minutes bursting from midfield exchanging passes with Wolstencroft to finish with aplomb from 12 yards.

Chambers, taking an excellent pass from Hayes in her stride, progressed unopposed into the area to slot home at Davis’s near post from eight yards to notch a goal for the eighth consecutive game just past the half hour. Wolstencroft then notched three goals in a four-minute spell to take her personal tally to five before Abdullahi scored a brace inside the final minute of the half as United entered the break with a ten-goal lead.

The Reds made their maximum five changes at the start of the second half with Shauna Ward making an instant impact finding Adora Yau on the edge of the area from the first corner of the half. Yau struck a low shot into a crowded area and the ricochet fell kindly to Abdullahi who toe poked her hat-trick goal home from point blank range. A minute later she slotted home her fourth and United’s 12th of the evening. Just before the hour Abdullahi had the game’s 13th and her fifth to draw level with Wolstencroft in the game.

On the hour, Leah Hartshorne joined in the scoring tapping home from two yards after a cross from Ward saw Wolstencroft head against the post with Hartshorne reacting fastest to the rebound. Two minutes later and Hartshorne had her brace this time crafting a sublime effort over the keeper from 15 yards.

Hannah Dobie launched a corner into the near post where Wolstencroft scored from close range on 68 minutes to achieve her double hat-trick and Yau, taking a square ball from Wolstencroft in the middle of the Heyside area took a touch before curling a superb effort around a defender and beyond the despairing dive of Davis, two minutes later.

Heyside enjoyed a spell of pressure resulting in a corner that was well delivered and met by the head of Ella Milanovic forcing Chloe Williams into a fantastic flying save with Jess Tonge clearing the danger and preserving the Red’s clean sheet. Abdullahi achieved her double hatrick on 73 minutes after good work from Ward and two minutes later Wolstencroft equalled Abdullahi’s seven goals in a game record after the latter unselfishly squared to her to score from close range. After the keeper uncharacteristically fumbled a Hartshorne cross, Abdullahi equalled her own record, scoring her seventh of the match tapping in the game’s 20th with ten minutes remaining.

Hartshorne centred a low hard cross to the edge of the area where Ward met it first time and shaped her shot beyond Davies for her first of the evening. Hartshorne fired in a shot which Davis did well to save at the expense of a corner which was well delivered by Ward only for Hartshorne to power a header against the bar.

With five minutes remaining, Wolstencroft scored a record eighth in one game only for Abdullahi to equal the feat a minute later and with both predators poised to receive a cross in the 90th minute, Ward decided to go it alone and fire in her second goal, and United’s record breaking 24th as referee Kevin Moore called time on proceedings. Both teams were enthusiastically and respectfully applauded from the pitch and attention now reverts to the league as second placed Beechfield United visit Abraham Moss this coming Sunday, 22nd March in a game that could go a long way to determining the destiny of this year’s title. Get yourself to that football ground for a 2.30pm kick off.
