Match Report
United’s second ‘home from home’ game at a sun-bathed Abraham Moss Centre saw the Reds despatch Reddish North End 8-1 in the third and final league meeting of the season between the sides. The victory completed a treble over the visitors after two previous successes at North Reddish Park earlier in the campaign. It also consolidates United’s second spot in the league and keeps the pressure on leaders Beechfield United ahead of the top of the table clash away, next Sunday.

A comprehensive first half display saw the reds leading 6-0 at the break with a brace each for Feiruz Abdullahi and Shellby Wolstencroft and strikes from Ainsley Strickland and Beth Hayes. Reddish, as in previous encounters, never gave up and reduced to ten players due to an injury to their keeper, restricted United to two strikes at either end of the second half. Captain Kirsty Chambers grabbed the seventh just after the break and Strickland completed her brace in the final moments of the game. Sandwiched between the second half strikes was a confident consolation header from Reddish striker Kelly Brown.

Reddish began the game in combative mood and earned a free kick in the centre circle in the first minute but drove the ball straight into the grateful arms of Mary Priestner. After a couple of FC forays it was Sarah Massey who once again posed a threat for the visitors but Jess McCarrick read and cleared the danger well in a tussle that she would have the best of all afternoon. McCarrick launched United’s first serious attack on five minutes in and released Abdullahi who was tripped right on the edge of the area. Chambers curled in a menacingly low free kick that was scrambled clear for a corner that was cleared behind at the near post. The retake went long and Wolstencroft headed goal wards from close range as a combination of keeper, Dogruturk and her defenders cleared the danger momentarily.

Abdullahi fired just wide as United ramped up the pressure and just a minute later Wolstencroft sprayed the ball wide to Hayes who measured a superb cross to the back post where Wolstencroft finished the move she’d begun by volleying home from a yard out on nine minutes.

A good response by Reddish saw them earn a corner after good cover defending from Amy Battel. The corner went long to the far edge of the area where United’s defence rushed out to charge down a stinging shot as Wolstencroft released Chambers in a swift counter attack and the captain’s drive across the face of goal only narrowly evaded the far post. Wolstencroft measured a half volley from twenty yards that just cleared the bar and the industrious Aimee Cooke seized on the resultant goal kick in centre field slotting a weighted pass through to Abdullahi who, under pressure fired coolly low to the keeper’s left into the bottom corner to double the lead just after the quarter hour.

Just before the half hour, Hayes added a third after a Chambers’ corner was attacked in a crowded area by Battel and Hayes looped her shot goalward from six yards with Samaya Keane’s headed clearance nestling in the roof of her own net. The Hayes shot was goal bound and almost over the line when Keane intervened and the number seven was most insistent that the credit was hers.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Dogruturk retired hurt just after the third goal; Keane took her place in goal and with no substitutes available Reddish were reduced to ten players. United were to test the new custodian within minutes after Strickland curled a superb shot from the left angle of the area into the top corner at the far post. Two more goals were added deep into the first period as Wolstencroft was teed up by Chambers, lashing her strike into the top corner from 30 yards. On 45 minutes Keane produced a superb save tipping over from a powerful Strickland header but a minute later Abdullahi breached the defence once again to slot home her second of the game.

In the lengthening wintery shadows it was the visitors who began the second half on the front foot and Priestner did well to collect a dangerous low cross. She then launched the most fluent move of the game rolling out to Cooke who found Abdullahi first time who in turn first timed her pass to Chambers who returned the favour and Abdullahi surged into the area ultimately forcing a corner. The move perhaps deserved a better end product but from the resulting set piece Chambers picked up the headed clearance and cut in field to strike from 35 yards; her shot looping over Keane in the 49th minute.

United made several changes shortly afterward and the game lost some of the earlier rhythm for a while, as often happens. During this period Reddish had their best chance of the game as Hannah Wilson rode a strong challenge on the edge of United’s area and stabbed a low shot at Priestner who reacted well to clear with her feet. Just passed the hour Abdullahi earned a penalty, took responsibility and blasted over the bar but ironically this settled the home side down and several chances followed in the next 20 minutes without any addition to the scoreline.

Just inside the last ten minutes Reddish deservedly scored a consolation as Kelly Brown rose highest from a corner and headed confidently beyond Priestner from six yards. In a bizarre incident six minutes from time, the visitors’ Laura Molloy called for a halt in play as she had a head dress needle protruding from her knee. The physios from both sides ensured it was safely removed and Molloy was able to carry on.

The game resumed with United quickest back into their stride and Charlie Evans cut an inviting ball back from the bye line for Strickland to guide a superb half volley past Keane to seal an 8-1 victory in the 89th minute.

Player of the game: Jess McCarrick – in a good all round team display Jess had a superb game alongside Adora Yau at the heart of defence. Her solid performance and assured distribution was the launch pad for many of United’s best moments.
