Match Report
UPDATE 03/11/2014 - The referee took the game straight to penalties when extra time should have been played. Chorltonians appealed and the fixture must be replayed. Below is the match report from the day.

A second visit to the Hough End Centre in a fortnight, once again saw Chorltonians LFC play host to FC United’s women’s team; this time in the first round of the League Challenge Cup. A very evenly-matched encounter ended 2-2 with FC taking the lead through Shauna Ward midway through the first half and Kate Davill levelling things before the break. The home team took the lead through Elizabeth Livesey just past the hour but it was FC’s captain, Kirsty Chambers who equalised with just ten seconds to go.

Penalties followed the late late show and the women prevailed where the men had failed at Radcliffe earlier in the week, despatching their first four penalties with deadly composure as Chloe Williams pulled off a great save and Chorltonians keeper, Natalie Callaghan dragged their fifth spot kick wide of the post to send United through to a quarter final tie with Uppermill Ladies.

Having played each other so recently, familiarity was the victor in the early stages of the game as both sides contributed to a disjointed and cagey opening and it was the tricky Jordana Shaw who fired the game’s first shot on target as the hosts looked to strike early. Williams was the equal to the fierce drive from Shaw and fielded it well. Unusually, it took United quarter of an hour before their first real effort on goal as Shauna Ward combined with Charlie Evans but dragged her shot wide.

Not long after, Ward didn’t miss as she followed up a Chambers strike that cannoned off a defender and coolly side-footed into the bottom corner of the wrong footed Callaghan’s net to record her first goal for the reds. The home side responded well as the game remained finely balanced and from a corner Jayme Leigh-Blake saw her goalbound header well cleared but Shaw was first to the ball and drove down the right edge of the United box, cut the ball back to Leigh-Blake who swung a high, looping cross to the far side of the area. Kate Davill bested Amy Battel to the loose ball and swept her effort past the despairing dive of Williams to level the scores on 33 minutes. Chambers almost restored the reds’ lead just before the break but her deflected long-range effort spun agonisingly wide and the half ended level.

FC reconfigured things after the break reverting to 4-4-2 and looked to build on the increasing possession this gave them. However the hosts had other ideas and sensed a real opportunity to knock the unbeaten reds out of the cup for the second successive season and just past the hour Elizabeth ‘Biff’ Livesey rose highest at a corner and headed accurately into the top corner of Williams goal, giving keeper and defenders on the line no chance.

Sensing the imminence of a first round exit and an end to their perfect start to then season, United pressed for an equaliser with Chorltonians almost capitalising several times on the break; largely through the tricky Shaw but regularly thwarted by Chelsea Patient and Adora Yau at the heart of FC’s defence. Jess McCarrick entered the fray and made an impressive debut creating an almost perfect opportunity for Shellby Wolstencroft to level the scores as her shot just cleared the angle of bar and post.

Chambers saw Callaghan tip her 35-yard free kick round the post on 68 minutes and her looping shot cannon back off the bar with just five minutes left. But at the last, Chambers, who lead from the front and by example all game, latched onto a through ball as referee Graham Andrew was poised to blow for time as he mentally counted down the last ten seconds of the 90 minutes. Livesey, who’d played Chambers on side, rushed to try and intercept the inevitable strike but Chambers unleashed her fearsome drive from ten yards out giving Callaghan no chance and sending the reds and all on the sidelines into ecstasy. No sooner had Chorltonians restarted the game the referee finally called time sending the encounter to penalties.

Chorltonians started the shoot out as both sides scored the first three spot kicks each. Up stepped scorer of the host’s first goal in the game, Kate Davill and as the number four struck the fourth penalty Williams guessed correctly and dived well to make a crucial save. Nicky Carlin maintained FC’s strike rate to put maximum pressure on Chorltonians keeper Callaghan who stepped up to take the fifth spot kick. She drove her powerful shot narrowly wide and United were through 4-3 in the shoot-out sparking jubilant celebrations.

It was an intriguing tie with all the drama of cup football and by a quirk of the fixture list it all happens again at Hough End next week, 19 October, as the reds meet Chorltonians for the third time in four weeks as both sides return to league action.

Player of the game: Adora Yau – the toughest examination of the season so far and Adora read every situation superbly and unerringly at centre half partnered well by Chelsea Patient. Special mention also to Chloe Williams for a solid display between the posts and a superb penalty save and of course Kirsty Chambers for never giving up and snatching a dramatic equaliser with the last kick of the game.
