Match Report
Second half goals from Cosmos Okeke, Tunde Owolalabi, Justin Johnson, Frank van Gils and Jon Poizer secured a 5-0 win against an experienced Thackley side to win the Lancashire League Cup. Along with the league title secured earlier the lads have completed an impressive trophy double.

Having beaten the hosts twice in the league, the first half was goal-less. This owed much to the dogged determination of Thackley as FC United dominated possession but were unable to break through. Matt Keen in the Thackley goal dealt with everything that found its way through to him. Charlie Doyle and David Kuba Kuba were particularly unlucky and the move of the half on 35 minutes as FC broke from defence and saw a good shot saved before being turned out for a corner. The FC United bench were convinced a penalty was due to them on 40 minutes but the assistant on the stand side had spotted a handball decision in Thackley’s favour.

The half time message was to continue to play football and the goals would come, and so they did. However not before Keen gave two quickfire demonstrations of why he would be given his own reward. With ten minutes gone, van Gils passed to Johnson and his shot seemed to be arrowing in to the top corner before Keen intervened. Barely two minutes later, Doyle crossed for Jean Biansumba who saw his shot turned wide for a corner.

Unfortunately his resistance couldn’t last as Thackley began to tire and the gaps began to appear. On 65 minutes Johnson crossed for Okeke, both second half substitutes, and the latter took time to set himself before shooting home. The lead was doubled barely two minutes later with possibly the goal of the game. Tunde Owolabi got possession around the half way line and powered through the Thackley defence including Keen to slot home.

From there it was a question of how many goals would be scored as chances came and went. The third goal was scored on 78 minutes from an FC corner. Johnson played the ball short to van Gils who played the ball back. From the corner of the penalty area, Johnson lashed an unstoppable shot into the far top corner.

It was 4-0 on 83 minutes when van Gils was fouled in the area and put the spot kick low to Keen’s right and a fifth was scored in injury time. Scott Cheetham may well have been shooting from the edge of the box, but his sliced effort didn’t even cross the goal line. Van Gils was the first to react and set up Poizer to fire home. Throughout this there were more FC chances and more demonstrations as to why Keen would be selected to receive the Gary Parkinson Memorial Trophy for man of the match in the presentation ceremony.

Then it was left to Chris Taylor, otherwise largely untested in the FC goal to perform the task of collecting the trophy from Lancashire League refereeing secretary Barry Cropp and commence the celebrations.
