Match Report
The Development Squad safely negotiated the problems the M62 can bring in travelling to Garforth and came away with a 5-2 win that saw them extend their lead at the top of the table. Goals from Scott Cheetham and Jon Poizer accompanied a Matthew Boland hat-trick that contained two penalties.

It was around 7pm when the squad finally completed its gathering but that didn’t stop the reds making their now customary speedy start. A free kick after just twenty seconds found its way to Frank van Gils on the left wing, and his ball into Cheetham was quickly despatched into the far corner for the first goal, with only 43 seconds gone.

This was the cue for FC to dominate the first half, keeping Michael Bathurst in the home goal particularly busy. Boland, returning from a loan spell with Atherton Laburnum Rovers in the NorthWest Counties was determined to show what we were missing. He had been the fulcrum of some good moves before making it 2-0 on 18 minutes, Poizer, recovering a ball played down in to the right corner played the ball to Boland, his interchange with van Gils, involving a neat back heeled return created the space for a shot into the bottom corner. Poizer himself got on the score sheet five minutes later as Frank claimed another assist. This time a short corner exchange saw Poizer play the ball straight into the top corner of the goal.

FC United continued to dominate the half but perhaps with not the same intensity. This was something that continued into the second as Garforth tried to find a way back into the game. They did so with two goals just after the hour mark, both of which involved breaks from their own half down the middle of the pitch which caught the reds lacking concentration and Chris Taylor exposed and facing one-on one confrontations.

The game was turned back in FC’s favour on 71 minutes when Boland converted his first penalty. A short free kick from Josh Smethurst to Boland saw the ball played in field to David Kuba Kuba. His attempted diagonal ball to Smethurst who had drifted into the box seemed to be over hit but minimal contact between Josh and a home defender was deemed sufficient for the reefeeree to award the spot kick. Boland sent Bathurst the wrong way and this seemed to signal an end to the Garforth efforts to equalise.

The second spot kick was awarded on 79 minutes, a diagonal ball from Jason Fowles on the half way line found Smethurst beyond the defence, his cross seemed to be too deep but in retrieving the situation Jay Walcott was fouled. This time the keeper guessed right but was unable to get near a well placed kick.

This was the end of the scoring but there was still time for Justin Johnson to give another cameo demonstration of his potential with a jinking run and shot producing a save from Bathurst, also for Garforth to be denied what seemed to be a legitimate penalty claim of their own.

Next up for the young reds is another trip across the Pennines to fellow title contenders Brighouse Town on November 12th.
