Broadhurst Park Progress August 2014

Posted by Andy Walsh, General Manager FC United of Manchester on Thursday 14 August 2014
Here is the August blog update on the build progress at Broadhurst Park.

The re-engineering of the old Northwich Victoria stand is going according to plan and we expect it to be on site at the St Mary’s Road end of the ground in the next few weeks. The pitch works to the Ronald Johnson playing fields (pitches which we will be renting to Moston Juniors for their use) are also progressing well. We have improved and extended the drainage on those pitches which will make for a much improved facility.

Elsewhere, our FC volunteer gardening group ’The Diggers’ have cut back the hedge by the side of the Ronald Johnson pitches, vital work being done by volunteers which will help us deliver the project quicker. On the artificial pitch, the wet weather has required some remedial work to improve the ground condition and construction there is scheduled to start in the next week.

The turf for the main playing surface is due to arrive on site this week and laying the pitch is expected to take around 7-10 days. Having had a delay a few weeks ago because the weather was too dry the remnants of Hurricane Bertha has now rendered the ground too wet! It doesn’t rain but it pours! Once the turf goes down the look of the site will improve no end and make for some great images. The first turnstile block in the North West corner (behind Lightbowne Road) has its outer shell complete and work is under way on the other corners. The turnstiles have been manufactured and are ready to be installed

Apart from the St Mary’s Road stand on the east of the ground, most of the superstructure has now been completed and the external block work and brick work is now going up. The cladding rails to carry the railway sleeper facade at the first floor level is now in place and the iconic red walls to the roof-top plant deck are part way through being installed making the plant room watertight. In the body of the main stand, the fit out to the toilets, offices, changing rooms and classrooms are also underway.

With the superstructure up you might be forgiven for thinking that there is not much going on but there is much work taking place behind that structure and our contractors and suppliers are continuing to beaver away behind the scenes. The best way of course to view the progress to date is to come on one of our guided tours for members. There is much to see and it’s really inspiring to witness the progress to date. To register for a tour email John England here and state which Thursday or Saturday you are available.

The date and details of our first game in the new ground has yet to be finalised but as soon as we have full details we will let people know.

Don’t forget that we still need to raise funds to finance the project and it’s now easier than ever to pledge your support. We have had a fantastic contribution of £20,000 to the Community Share Scheme this week.

Please consider an application, an application form can be found with a simple click here.

You can also now make one-off donations to the Development Fund and below there are GoCardless donation links for various denominations. All donations will be used to help finance our new ground and community facility at Broadhurst Park.
