February 2019: FC United of Manchester and the community

February 2019: FC United of Manchester and the communityThe word ‘community’ is central to all FC United does. It is enshrined in our constitution and we have established numerous community-based projects.

We strive to include people of all ages and varying backgrounds in our community programme, offering them the chance to learn, train, develop new skills and interests, and grasp new opportunities they might not otherwise have.

Each month, we’re sharing the highlights from our community programme board report. Here’s a round-up from the February report.

Employability
* The club hosted two visits by students from Salford University, where staff and volunteers shared experience and skills developed in the areas of community engagement and event management.

Community cohesion
* The club is through to the second round of an application for £4,500 towards a community allotment project, covering the green space alongside the St Mary’s Road End.  The project will provide opportunities for local residents to come together to meet new people and re-establish the Diggers, a group that works on planting and gardening around Broadhurst Park.

Health and wellbeing
* Pure Innovations staff and young people visited Broadhurst Park to look at potential volunteering/ social activities.
* The sports participation team met Manchester Youth Zone to discuss partnering with them on a project called Future Stars. This will ensure our academy players are aware of different career paths and opportunities available to them once they complete our academy course.
* Our regular timetable for hire of the 3G pitches makes provision for Disability Football, Women’s Football, Girls Football, Walking Football and Mental Health Football. In February launched a Red Cross session.  There were 5,884 visits to the 3G in February.
* We continue to deliver sessions in Primary schools through our community coaches.
